Project
New system will streamline department
operations while also creating software architecture for future changes.
Minneapolis MN - September 5, 2001 - The Office of Consultant Services within
the Minnesota Department of Transportation (DOT) has selected ArchWing to
develop a database and reporting system to manage data regarding contracts for
Professional and Technical Services.
The new system will incorporate a web interface to access reports, a data entry
interface, a security profile for individual users controlling access to
information and read/write permissions, as well as information from the
Minnesota Accounting and Procurement System (MAPS). ArchWing is also responsible
for designing a system that will use an Oracle database as a persistence layer and
Crystal Reports to create reports and integrate data from databases, with
an archiving feature.
To meet goals and requirements of the project, the AWI solution will make extensive
use of Java, with an Object Oriented approach and layered architecture.
"The architecture of the system is crucial to the flexibility of a system,"
says Jason Parker, ArchWing President. "We know that most systems requiring
flexibility will benefit from a layered approach. The system is structured
so that the persistence (database), business rules (the programming governing the
functionality) and the interface (HTML pages for example) are kept as three
distinct layers."
The three-tier application architecture allows changes to be made to the
separate layers while minimizing the impact on the other layers. This increases
business control of rules and processes while decreasing the cost and
implementation time of future enhancements. ArchWing Innovations is a leader in the
Twin Cities in implementing this type of system.
